Star Rating
Energy Efficiency Requirements
Most of us are familiar with energy
rating labels for electrical and gas appliances like refrigerators
& freezers, washing machines, dishwashers etc. The star rating helps
us to compare the running costs and energy efficiency levels of different
models of those appliances. By selecting the most energy efficient appliance
energy use and costs can be reduced.
Since 2003 the Building Code of Australia (BCA) requires Energy Efficiency
Measurements for all new residential buildings in WA. Different software
packages are used for star rating homes and buildings. Energy efficiency measurements are also required for Class 2
to 9 buildings.
The BCA provides a two process pathways that can be followed for a Building
Solution (Class 1) to meet the Performance Requirement. These are described
as:
- Acceptable Construction (Deemed-to-Satisfy Provisions).
- Alternative Solutions (this may not be accepted in future)
